Most tree removal quotes cut the stump low and leave it. Grinding is a different machine, often a different visit, and on Shire blocks it is a different access problem entirely — a grinder is heavy, low and wide, and it has to reach the stump under its own power.
That is why a removal quote and a grinding quote should be given as two numbers. If someone gives you one figure with no mention of the stump, ask which one you are getting.
Sandstone changes everything
Most of the Sutherland Shire sits on Hawkesbury sandstone with shallow soil over it. In Gymea, Grays Point, Bangor and along the Port Hacking foreshore, you can hit rock 200mm down. A stump growing on a rock shelf has spread its roots sideways across the stone rather than down into soil, which means:
- The grind is shallower than you would expect, because there is nowhere to go.
- The lateral roots run further and need chasing if you are paving or building.
- Grinder teeth meeting sandstone is expensive for the contractor, so the quote reflects the risk.
Nobody can see this before starting. A decent quote says what happens if rock is struck rather than pretending it will not be.
Surface roots and the paving problem
Liquidambar and camphor laurel, both planted heavily through the older Shire streets, are the main offenders for lifting paving, cracking driveway crossings and blocking stormwater. Grinding the stump alone does not fix a run of surface roots twelve metres long.
Where roots are lifting a path or a slab, the work is stump grinding plus root chasing along the affected run, and it is worth knowing that cutting large structural roots on a living tree is a stability decision, not a landscaping one. If the tree is staying, that gets assessed before anything is cut.
Replanting over a ground stump
Grindings are carbon-rich and tie up nitrogen as they decompose. Turf will cope. A new tree or a vegetable bed will not, unless the grindings come out and soil goes in. If the plan is to replant in the same spot, say so — the hole is prepared differently.
There is also the honeycomb issue: old root channels leave the ground soft for a season or two, so expect to top up the level once after the first heavy rain.

Frequently asked questions
How deep does a stump need to be ground?
It depends what goes on top. For turf, 150 to 200mm below the surrounding surface is normally enough. For garden beds and replanting, 300mm or more, because roots and grindings take nitrogen out of the soil as they break down. For paving, a slab or a footing, deeper again and usually with the major roots chased out, which is a bigger job than grinding alone.
Can a grinder get into a narrow Shire backyard?
Often yes. Narrow-access machines fit through a standard 750 to 900mm side gate, which covers most Miranda, Caringbah and Kirrawee blocks. Where the only route is through the house or down sandstone steps, the options are a smaller hand-guided machine, hand excavation, or chemical treatment over time. What happens to the grindings?
By default the hole is backfilled with the grindings and topped off, which settles over a few months and is fine under turf. If you want it clean-filled with soil ready for planting or paving, say so at quote stage — carting grindings out and soil in is extra labour and it belongs in the price rather than turning up as a surprise.
Do you check for pipes and cables first?
Yes, and so should you. A grinder wheel will destroy irrigation, stormwater, sewer, gas and comms services without slowing down.
