The Sutherland Shire is not generic Sydney. Most of it sits on Hawkesbury sandstone, which means shallow soil, rock shelves a metre down, and a native canopy of angophora, Sydney red gum, scribbly gum and blackbutt that grows very differently to the planted liquidambars and camphor laurels in the older street plantings.

Add the rest of it — bushland interface along the Royal National Park and the Woronora, salt-laden southerlies hitting the Cronulla peninsula, waterfront blocks on Port Hacking where the only access is a set of sandstone steps, and battle-axe driveways in Miranda that a chipper truck cannot physically enter — and you have a set of problems that do not turn up in a standard quote.

What we take on

Whole-tree removal, where the tree comes down in sections off rope or is craned out over the roof from the street. Pruning that reduces risk without wrecking the tree. Stumps ground out below grade so you can turf or pave over them. Palms, which are their own job entirely. And emergency work after a storm, which is a different discipline again.

What we will not do is top a healthy gum because it has grown taller than the neighbour would like. Topping an angophora produces a flush of weakly attached epicormic regrowth that fails in exactly the storm you were trying to prepare for — and on sandstone, where root plates are shallow and wide, it does nothing at all for stability. If someone has quoted you that, ask them what the tree looks like in five years.

Council rules come before the chainsaw

Sutherland Shire Council protects trees through the tree management provisions in its Development Control Plan. In practice that means written approval before you remove or substantially prune a protected tree, with exemptions for certain species, small trees, dead trees and genuine emergencies.

It is not paperwork to sort out afterwards. Removing a protected tree without approval is an offence and the penalties are real money. Before quoting a removal we tell you whether the tree looks exempt, looks protected, or is a case that needs an arborist report to support an application.

Separately, if your property sits inside a 10/50 Vegetation Clearing Entitlement Area — common through the bushland fringe at Engadine, Menai and Bangor — you may be able to clear within 10 metres of the house without council approval. That is checked by address on the Rural Fire Service tool, not assumed.

The trees we deal with constantly

Angophora costata, the Sydney red gum, is the signature tree of the Shire's sandstone ridges and gullies. It is beautiful, it sheds large limbs in summer without much warning, and it is frequently protected. Scribbly gum and Sydney peppermint fill out the bushland blocks. On the older residential streets it is camphor laurel, liquidambar and cocos palm that generate most of the removal work — the first two because they outgrew the block, the last because of the fruit, the fronds and the rats.
